Parallel-netCDF 1.1.0pre1, released on 22 April 2009, introduced our new file format. This new file format supports arbitrarily large variable sizes. The low-level details are in NewFileFormatDefinition. Usage information is in NewFileFormatCode. Kui Gao from Northwestern University did a lot of work to make this reality. Thanks, Kui!

If you have avoided pnetcdf because your variables were larger than 4GB, or you have used record variables only to get around the 4GB limit, please give this pre-release a try and share with us any feedback you might have. This release still supports the classic NetCDF file formats in addition to this new, less-restrictive format.
